This is a beautiful instrument, and has a unique sound only found in these models. The front valve slide is stuck, but I haven't tried much more than gently pulling on it. More it does have some issues, there are dents in the tubing, and on the bell, it has a lot of corrosion on the lead pipe, and a ton of scratches and scuffs everywhere, all over. This horn plays like a dream with a beautiful sound and incredible response and slotting. The bell has that famous french double bead rim for better response and projection. The valves have great action and compression. More a letter"B" The Olds Recording trumpet was a copy of this design.
I'm pretty sure he bought it at Chuck Levin's in the early 60's. This was my father-in-law's horn which he played through college and in the Air Force. It also has a fair amount of sweat damage on the bottom of the valves and the third valve slide. It doesn't affect the sound but it sucks that it happened. This horn is completely unrestored and the lacquer is beautifully dark but it has a serious dent on the bell tube right behind the valves. Overblow this sucker and it rattles like a snare drum.
For those that do not know why this valve block is set forward in this horn.it is because Harry was so tall and had long arms. This is a 24A Selmer Harry James Balanced Model. I have a rotary valve Calicchio project in the works, but it is unassembled, so it will have to wait until later. I am having a surgery soon, and will be out of commish for awhile, so I had better part with a few things. Because I had not intended to sell it. Seller added the following information: This is a rare Selmer Paris Balanced trumpet from the early fifties(Serial 13623 which means it was made in late 1952) It's the famous"equilibrée" model- Harry James' horn(before he switched to King) Because of theSo this is the last of my holy grails.
So it had to be heated and taken apart to be undone. As in it spent too much time at Stuckeys' or listened to Stuck in the Middle with you too many times.you get the picture. The tuning slide was also stuck bad. So the tuning slide area is a bit more shiny than the rest. I had a silver hook, but to make the horn correct as possible, it had to be in brass, so I stripped the silver off of it. Morever, as opposed to further again) it was missing a pinky hook.
So it has had a bell wrinkle and I can't hide that without getting it down to raw brass. Now I had thought that I would strip and polish this horn someday, but I figured I would let the"Patina crowd" have a go at it first, before I strip it and polish it. But the downside is that it lost some lacquer in the process.
I don't have the original case, or any other case that will fit it.so it would be best to use a gig bag and a gTAX REFUND $PECIAL! VERY RARE IN THIS CONDITION! VINTAGE!
